NBVC Surf Contest at Point Mugu, August 20-21, 2011
Naval Base Ventura County Point Mugu Surf Contest Presented by Quiksilver is taking place this weekend and will be open to the public. FREE admission and parking, live music, food and fun! Military surfers along with Professional Civilians including John Mel, Adam Virs and Tyler Newton will compete to support the Liberty/Single Sailor programs for Ventura’s local troops! The NBVC PM Surf Contest is an exciting opportunity for the surfing community to access one of the best waves Southern California has to offer, and for NBVC to showcase their award winning stewardship of the environmentally sensitive beach and wetlands inside their gates.
With a fading south swell in the water and some south-west swell filling in the forecast is calling for chest high with occasional shoulder high sets that’ll light up Point Mugu making for some very contestable surf. And be prepared for some amazing maneuvers to go down when 4X World Champ Stephanie Gilmore and Craig Anderson surf in Sunday’s Expression Session.

Quarterfinalist Decided at Quiksilver Pro New York
LONG BEACH, Long Island, NY (Sept. 8, 2011) – The world’s best surfers tore through a marathon day of competition with some incredible performances at the Quiksilver Pro New York, supported by vitaminwater, to decide the event’s quarterfinalists in pumping six foot (1.5 metre) surf. World champion Kelly Slater, young Australian Josh Kerr, and Brazil’s Heitor Alves were show-stopping.
Stop No. 6 of 11 on the ASP World Title Series, today’s Quiksilver Pro New York competition saw non-stop action as the ASP Top 34 put it all on the line at Long Beach, chasing the ASP World Title, the historic US$1,000,000 prize purse and crucial points to secure their position amongst the elite prior to the midyear rotation following the event.
Josh Kerr (AUS), 27, clawed his way back in Round 4 after Kelly Slater (USA), 39, took a commanding lead with a 9.37 for a big frontside alley-oop. The progressive Australian answered with two airs of his own: The first, a massive backside varial to the tune of 9.57, then another, lofting a gigantic alley-oop for a 9.70 to overtake the reigning 10-time ASP World Champion and advance directly through to the Quarterfinals.
“I can’t believe it just happened like that,” Kerr said. “I didn’t expect to make that varial and when I did I thought, ‘it’s time to go now.’ Then I got one straight after it. I couldn’t have planned it any better. The fans are really cool and it’s great to be in New York with everyone screaming, it’s great. I definitely gained confidence from that heat. I’ve never beaten Kelly (Slater) and I’m just so stoked right now.”
Owen Wright (AUS), 21, went on a rampage against former ASP World Champion C.J. Hobgood (USA), 32, in his Round 3 heat, tearing through the high-performance lefts and rights at Long Beach. The lanky goofy-footer posted the highest single-wave score of the event, 9.80 out of 10, when he unveiled a ferocious, inverted backside air-reverse to solidify the victory and went on to take out his Round 4 heat in commanding fashion to advance into the Quarterfinals.
“I just went out there and knew it would be a hard heat with C.J. (Hobgood) needing a result and me wanting a result,” Wright said. “I was excited to get out there to have a good heat. I put together a good one and C.J. just didn’t find his rhythm. I really enjoyed it and had a really good time.”
Hobgood, a fixture on the elite ASP Dream Tour for more than a decade, needed to defeat Wright in their Round 3 bout to remain on the ASP World Title Series for 2011, but was gracious in defeat regarding the tough loss.
“At the end of it, I don’t want to be known as the 2001 World Champion,” Hobgood said. “I want to be known as a guy that loved Jesus and loved everyone and had fun and that’s it. It’s not a sad day for me. The waves are pumping and Owen went mad in that heat. Everything happens for a reason and I’m enjoying the beautiful day here today. It’s just awesome to be a part of.”
Heitor Alves (BRA), 29, was also responsible for two big upsets today, taking down two-time ASP World Champion Mick Fanning (AUS), 30, in Round 3 before eliminating current ASP World Title contender Joel Parkinson (AUS), 30, in Round 5.
“I can’t believe it,” Alves said. “I’m so tired right now after surfing three heats and happy too. I beat Joel Parkinson and Mick Fanning. Thanks to God for everything he has given me. I’m looking for my best result, maybe I’ll find it here.”
Kelly Slater (USA), 39, current leader on the ASP World Title Rankings, rebounded after his Round 4 loss and took a convincing victory over Jeremy Flores (FRA), 23, in Round 5 despite the tough onshore afternoon conditions and the veteran surfer admitted the importance of advancing into the Quarterfinals while hunting an ASP World Title.
“The conditions are tough,” Slater said. “It has changed a lot from my last heat and with the rips from east wind, it’s a lot trickier, especially on the lefts. I was trying to find peaky mid-sized rights and wasn’t sure where to sit. Obviously you want to make at least Quarterfinals when you’re in position for a World Title. Maybe Owen (Wright) and Joel (Parkinson) are facing the pressure for that as well.”
Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow at 6:30am to assess conditions for a possible 7:30am start.
Surfline, official forecasters for the Quiksilver Pro New York, are calling for Solid SE swell from Hurricane Katia expected during the second half of the week before fading headed into the weekend.

TOP SEEDS DOMINATE QUIKSILVER PRO NEW YORK
LONG BEACH, Long Island, NY (Sept. 7, 2011) – The Quiksilver Pro New York supported by vitaminwater continued for the second consecutive day at Long Beach in Long Island, New York and saw the completion of Round 2 as well as the first four heats of Round 3

The domination of high seeds today brought an end to the run of New York hometown hero Balaram Stack, 20, who has drawn massive crowds each day of competition. He lost to Australia’s Mick Fanning in Round 2 early this-morning.
Stop No. 6 of 11 on the ASP World Title Series, the Quiksilver Pro New York marks the final event before the mid-year rotation and offers up the richest prize purse in surfing history of US$1,000,000. Hurricane Katia continued to deliver increasing surf of up to six feet (2 meters) throughout the day, with higher surf forecast for tomorrow.
Adriano de Souza (BRA), 24, current No. 4 on the ASP World Title Series, vigorously attacked the Long Beach lefthanders on his backhand and belted the day’s highest single-wave score of 9.20 while netting the top heat-total of 17.93 (out of 20), in Round 2 before taking his Round 3 heat.
“I’m really happy with my performance today,” De Souza said. “My first heat was better for sure, I got the 9 and the 8, but I tried to get in rhythm in Round 3 and I hope I can keep going and get a good result in here. My house is really similar to these waves in New York and I feel at home out in these conditions.”
De Souza, who defeated Travis Logie (ZAF), 33, in Round 2 before topping Patrick Gudauskas (USA), 25, in Round 3, kept his ASP World Title campaign alive with today’s effort and is hunting a strong result in New York to regain the No. 1 position on the ASP World Title Rankings.
“I’m stoked to make my heats today,” De Souza said. “We had tough conditions and I knew for me that if I fell in that heat I would be out of the World Title Race. I’m happy to make it and hope I can keep my rhythm for the rest of the event. I’m looking forward to the no-loser’s Round 4 and hopefully I can keep going in this event.”
Taj Burrow (AUS), 32, put on an amazing aerial performance on his forehand in Round 3 compliments of the side-shore winds blowing into the Long Beach right-handers and lofted a 17.10 heat-total while eliminating Adam Melling (AUS), 26, from competition.
“It’s pretty good out there,” Burrow said. “Us natural footers that like to do airs rub our hands together when wind’s like that. I did that big alley-oop on that first wave and I stacked it, but when I was through air I felt the board sticking to my feet. I knew that heat was going to be fun. I wasn’t aware of his (Adam Melling’s) position on the rankings, but I’m thinking about the money. I’m trying not to, but it’s there in the back of my head.”
Melling, current No. 35 on the ASP World Ranking, will not make the mid-year rotation for Trestles, but could possibly appear as an alternate in the remainder of the ASP World Title events.
Mick Fanning (AUS), 30, two-time ASP World Champion, rebounded after a Round 1 loss yesterday, making a change in his equipment to dispatch of dangerous local wildcard Balaram Stack (USA), 20, with a dominant performance.
“It’s always hard when you lose that first round, you’ve got to go back and pick up the pieces and go again,” Fanning said. “Wildcards are difficult because they’re usually locals and they know spot. I tried to get moving early and keep moving. The tide was dropping out and I just tried to get them in early. My board yesterday wasn’t working to well, so I went back to my normal shortboard that I’ve been riding all year.”
Brett Simpson (USA), 26, got the best of a series of exchanges over ASP Dream Tour veteran Taylor Knox (USA), 40, in their Round 2 match-up. Knox, current No. 30 on the ASP World Ranking, will wait on the results of the surfers ranked behind him who are still alive in the Quiksilver Pro New York to see if he maintains his position among the ASP Top 34 entering Trestles.
“We all knew coming into this event that Taylor (Knox) needed to do something and I am coming off momentum from Teahupo’o,” Simpson said. “He’s been a mentor and friend since I started on tour last year. He’s inspired all of us. It’s just the way it goes. I was anxious. I knew there was a lot on the line for him and I want to climb the rankings too.”
Simpson will face off against ASP Dream Tour rookie Julian Wilson (AUS), 22, in Round 3.
Jeremy Flores (FRA), 23, who was a standout at Teahupo’o, maintained his form in the beachbreak conditions on offer at the Quiksilver Pro New York, eliminating fellow European and close friend Tiago Pires (PRT), 31, in a hard-fought Round 3 battle.
“I didn’t like surfing against Tiago, I want him on tour,” Flores said. “He’s my friend, but I want to do well here, I want to make heats, but I wanted to see him do well here because I knew he needed a result. I couldn’t find any really good waves. The guys in the heats before had fun waves with great walls and mine were fat or wide. I guess my wave choice was bad, but I made it.”
Bobby Martinez (USA), 29, was disqualified from the event due to an unprofessional outburst after winning his Round 2 heat. Martinez would have met world No.1 Kelly Slater in Round 3. Slater now advances directly to Round 4. Further details are available at www.aspworldtour.com
When competition resumes, the event’s highest heat scorer to date – Josh Kerr, 27, (AUS) – will be against Raoni Monteiro (BRA), 29, in Heat 5 of Round 3.

Balaram Stack on ESPN
Long Beach, NY local and Quiksilver team rider Balaram Stack will be going head-to-head with the top pros on his home break at the upcoming Quiksilver Pro NY. Quiksilver Pro New York – Event Update
Organizers of the Quiksilver Pro New York, the world’s first $1M professional surfing event, are back on the ground in Long Beach, NY today working to rebuild the surf competition and festival sites to deliver the action sports and music experience originally intended before the hurricane Irene.
**The surf contest will have the same “holding period” scheduled for September 1 through 15, with the contest held during 3-4 best days of the waiting period. The Unsound Surf Trials are still scheduled to be held September 1 to 3.**
**All skate/bmx/moto/music events will have the same dates and schedules will be updated throughout the week as the event site is built, so please check back to www.quiksilverpro.com for frequent schedule updates.**
**Tony Hawk’s Vert Jam will still take place on Friday, September 2nd at Pier 54 in New York City.”
Long Beach took a direct hit from Irene, a category 1 hurricane when it moved through. Storm surge, big waves and a coinciding high tide caused large scale erosion to the beach at National Boulevard that is the host site to the Quiksilver Pro. As instructed by the city of Long Beach Quiksilver Pro event structures were removed prior to Irene’s arrival, so no structural loss has been incurred. Quiksilver will be working alongside the City of Long Beach to monitor the building daily to determine how to manfacture the same experience as intended before Irene.
“Surfing events have always required daily flexibility, so while Irene posed a larger than normal challenge, it was still well within the realm of what we prepare for when staging professional surfing events,” said Quiksilver’s Luke Watson. “We chose the upcoming weeks to stage the event because it was hurricane season, offering the greatest potential for good surf. So planning for hurricanes was par for the course. Our event has an extended 15-day holding period precisely to negotiate the elements of nature, which is the essence of our sport. It is possible that we can complete the event in as few as three days of contestable surf, so we do have flexibility in scheduling. We will not be extending the period beyond its original end-date of September 15 and we definitely have the ability to take a little extra time on the front end to assess conditions and rebuild the site when the city deems it is safe to do so.”
The world’s top surfers are currently competing in the 5th stop on the ASP World Tour in Tahiti and are not expected in New York before September 2. The first three days of the holding period – September 1-3, were set aside for a local trials event to determine a wildcard entrant to the main event. The professionals are not scheduled to compete before September 4.
Quiksilver would like to encourage all out-of-state and international media and fans attending the event to check with their airline carriers for flight disruptions. Local airports have not yet announced when they will re-open.
Quiksilver will continue to provide event dates as more information becomes available. For media registered for the event, we will not be distributing media credentials until Thursday, September 1, so working media should please wait for updates on where to pick up credentials.

An important update from Long Beach — Quiksilver is working closely with the City of Long Beach to preserve the heart of the ASP World Tour surf contest scheduled to start on Sunday, September 4 in light of the impact of Hurricane Irene and concerns for the Long Beach community, which suffered significant damage from the storm. The Quiksilver Pro is scheduled to start its 11-day “holding period” on Monday, September 5. The Quiksilver Pro Trials presented by Unsound Surf will run on Sunday, September 4.
The situation has been changing daily, and we recognize that City resources are focused on hurricane restoration and clean up as first priority. In that context, we have been informed by the City that the festival and music components of the event are no longer achievable.
The Quiksilver Pro NY is first and foremost about the surf contest and Long Beach has an incredible surfing tradition and spirit. We are committed to holding the ASP tour event at Long Beach so that together we can promote the sport by bringing together the best surfers in the world to this terrific community.

LONG BEACH, Long Island, NY (Sept. 8, 2011) – The world’s best surfers tore through a marathon day of competition with some incredible performances at the Quiksilver Pro New York, supported by vitaminwater, to decide the event’s quarterfinalists in pumping six foot (1.5 metre) surf. World champion Kelly Slater, young Australian Josh Kerr, and Brazil’s Heitor Alves were show-stopping.

Stop No. 6 of 11 on the ASP World Title Series, today’s Quiksilver Pro New York competition saw non-stop action as the ASP Top 34 put it all on the line at Long Beach, chasing the ASP World Title, the historic US$1,000,000 prize purse and crucial points to secure their position amongst the elite prior to the midyear rotation following the event.
Josh Kerr (AUS), 27, clawed his way back in Round 4 after Kelly Slater (USA), 39, took a commanding lead with a 9.37 for a big frontside alley-oop. The progressive Australian answered with two airs of his own: The first, a massive backside varial to the tune of 9.57, then another, lofting a gigantic alley-oop for a 9.70 to overtake the reigning 10-time ASP World Champion and advance directly through to the Quarterfinals.
“I can’t believe it just happened like that,” Kerr said. “I didn’t expect to make that varial and when I did I thought, ‘it’s time to go now.’ Then I got one straight after it. I couldn’t have planned it any better. The fans are really cool and it’s great to be in New York with everyone screaming, it’s great. I definitely gained confidence from that heat. I’ve never beaten Kelly (Slater) and I’m just so stoked right now.”
Owen Wright (AUS), 21, went on a rampage against former ASP World Champion C.J. Hobgood (USA), 32, in his Round 3 heat, tearing through the high-performance lefts and rights at Long Beach. The lanky goofy-footer posted the highest single-wave score of the event, 9.80 out of 10, when he unveiled a ferocious, inverted backside air-reverse to solidify the victory and went on to take out his Round 4 heat in commanding fashion to advance into the Quarterfinals.
“I just went out there and knew it would be a hard heat with C.J. (Hobgood) needing a result and me wanting a result,” Wright said. “I was excited to get out there to have a good heat. I put together a good one and C.J. just didn’t find his rhythm. I really enjoyed it and had a really good time.”
Hobgood, a fixture on the elite ASP Dream Tour for more than a decade, needed to defeat Wright in their Round 3 bout to remain on the ASP World Title Series for 2011, but was gracious in defeat regarding the tough loss.
“At the end of it, I don’t want to be known as the 2001 World Champion,” Hobgood said. “I want to be known as a guy that loved Jesus and loved everyone and had fun and that’s it. It’s not a sad day for me. The waves are pumping and Owen went mad in that heat. Everything happens for a reason and I’m enjoying the beautiful day here today. It’s just awesome to be a part of.”
Heitor Alves (BRA), 29, was also responsible for two big upsets today, taking down two-time ASP World Champion Mick Fanning (AUS), 30, in Round 3 before eliminating current ASP World Title contender Joel Parkinson (AUS), 30, in Round 5.
“I can’t believe it,” Alves said. “I’m so tired right now after surfing three heats and happy too. I beat Joel Parkinson and Mick Fanning. Thanks to God for everything he has given me. I’m looking for my best result, maybe I’ll find it here.”
Kelly Slater (USA), 39, current leader on the ASP World Title Rankings, rebounded after his Round 4 loss and took a convincing victory over Jeremy Flores (FRA), 23, in Round 5 despite the tough onshore afternoon conditions and the veteran surfer admitted the importance of advancing into the Quarterfinals while hunting an ASP World Title.
“The conditions are tough,” Slater said. “It has changed a lot from my last heat and with the rips from east wind, it’s a lot trickier, especially on the lefts. I was trying to find peaky mid-sized rights and wasn’t sure where to sit. Obviously you want to make at least Quarterfinals when you’re in position for a World Title. Maybe Owen (Wright) and Joel (Parkinson) are facing the pressure for that as well.”
Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow at 6:30am to assess conditions for a possible 7:30am start.

FLORIDA’S ASHER NOLAN WINS FINAL WILDCARD INTO THE QUIKSILVER PRO NEW YORK
Long Beach, Long Island, NY (September 4, 2011) — Florida’s Asher Nolan has won the final wildcard into the $1million Quiksilver Pro New York presented by vitaminwater. Nolan, 32, from Jacksonville, decisively topped a field of 16 surfers vying for the wildcard in today’s Quiksilver Pro New York ASP World Tour Trials, presented by UnSound Surf, supported by vitaminwater.

Nolan took out the final of today’s trials event ahead of Hawaii’s Keanu Asing, Australian Garrett Parkes, and Jeremy Johnston, from New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Waves were in the shoulder-high range and all four surfers traded waves for the full 25 minutes, much to the satisfaction of a hugely supportive Long Beach crowd of more than 20,000.
Nolan now joins local Long Beach wildcard Balaram Stack, who he is staying with this week, in the main event of the Quiksilver Pro New York. Nolan will be drawn against two-time world champion Mick Fanning (Australia) and Heitor Alves (Brazil) in his first round heat. Stack is drawn against 10-time world champion and current ASP World Tour ratings leader Kelly Slater (Florida), and Daniel Ross (Australia) in his first heat. The pair are guaranteed a minimum prize purse of $11,000 but will be aiming to work their way closer to the winner’s $300,000 pay day.
“I knew it was going to be really difficult today because of the conditions,” said Nolan after winning the final. “The 15 other surfers (in the trials) were really good surfers too. I was just taking it one heat at a time, I wasn’t thinking about winning the wildcard.
“I’m excited to come to NY. I’m ready to hang out with my friends, surf, go to the city, have a good time, so it’s really a win-win situation no matter what.
“I knew I could surf these waves. I’ve done well here before. I don’t compete as much as I used to, but I know that I can do it. This is awesome.”
Nolan has been a three-time finalist of the UnSound Pro, an annual rated event at Long Beach, so has plenty of experience at the break.
Main event competition could start as early as tomorrow, when a new swell will start filling in. The surf forecast looks very promising for four consecutive days of competition that could mean a final as early as Thursday. Check www.quiksilverpro.com at 7am each day for the status of competition.
** Please note: Regardless of whether competition starts tomorrow, there will be an Official Opening Ceremony at 11am at the beach event site, end of National Boulevard by the jetty. All ASP surfers have been invited to attend. Long Beach, Long Island, NY (September 5, 2011) — The Long Beach surfing community has never experienced an opening ceremony for an international professional surfing tournament, so a huge crowd turned out today to witness first hand what the $1million Quiksilver Pro New York presented by vitaminwater is all about.
Between the beach site, the flanking boardwalk and surrounding highrises, more than 40,000 watched on as Quiksilver’s Hawaiian ambassadors Mel Pu’u and Titus Kinimaka joined the world’s best surfers to share in the global surfing spirit.
A traditional 6-man Hawaiian canoe draped in flowers was the focal point as Pu’u explained that in order to set a canoe into motion, it takes the cohesive efforts of all aboard. And that has been the saving grace of the Quiksilver Pro New York. Despite a direct hit from a hurricane and a seemingly impossible cleanup and rebuild, the event is alive and well because of the synergy that developed between local surfers, the Long Beach City community, the ASP World Tour and the global Quiksilver family.
Local wildcard Balaram Stack, who turned 20 today, received an enormous ovation when he was presented to the crowd. Stack will face the world champ Kelly Slater straight off the bat.
Slater spoke enthusiastically today about being on the East Coast to surf: “I like being on the East Coast, I sort of feel like I’m home. Even today on the beach the crowd just seemed so into it and there’s nothing going on yet. Everyone’s just cheering it on and I think there’ll be an impressive crowd when Balaram paddles out because he got a pretty big welcome on the beach today. I’ve never surfed a world tour contest since I’ve been a pro on the East Coast.”
With a solid Surfline forecast in hand, organizers anticipate an 8am start tomorrow with competition running four consecutive days to a Friday climax, when waves are expected to peak at eight feet.

LONG BEACH, Long Island, NY (Sept. 7, 2011) – The Quiksilver Pro New York supported by vitaminwater continued for the second consecutive day at Long Beach in Long Island, New York and saw the completion of Round 2 as well as the first four heats of Round 3

The domination of high seeds today brought an end to the run of New York hometown hero Balaram Stack, 20, who has drawn massive crowds each day of competition. He lost to Australia’s Mick Fanning in Round 2 early this-morning.
Stop No. 6 of 11 on the ASP World Title Series, the Quiksilver Pro New York marks the final event before the mid-year rotation and offers up the richest prize purse in surfing history of US$1,000,000. Hurricane Katia continued to deliver increasing surf of up to six feet (2 meters) throughout the day, with higher surf forecast for tomorrow.
Adriano de Souza (BRA), 24, current No. 4 on the ASP World Title Series, vigorously attacked the Long Beach lefthanders on his backhand and belted the day’s highest single-wave score of 9.20 while netting the top heat-total of 17.93 (out of 20), in Round 2 before taking his Round 3 heat.
“I’m really happy with my performance today,” De Souza said. “My first heat was better for sure, I got the 9 and the 8, but I tried to get in rhythm in Round 3 and I hope I can keep going and get a good result in here. My house is really similar to these waves in New York and I feel at home out in these conditions.”
De Souza, who defeated Travis Logie (ZAF), 33, in Round 2 before topping Patrick Gudauskas (USA), 25, in Round 3, kept his ASP World Title campaign alive with today’s effort and is hunting a strong result in New York to regain the No. 1 position on the ASP World Title Rankings.
“I’m stoked to make my heats today,” De Souza said. “We had tough conditions and I knew for me that if I fell in that heat I would be out of the World Title Race. I’m happy to make it and hope I can keep my rhythm for the rest of the event. I’m looking forward to the no-loser’s Round 4 and hopefully I can keep going in this event.”
Taj Burrow (AUS), 32, put on an amazing aerial performance on his forehand in Round 3 compliments of the side-shore winds blowing into the Long Beach right-handers and lofted a 17.10 heat-total while eliminating Adam Melling (AUS), 26, from competition.
“It’s pretty good out there,” Burrow said. “Us natural footers that like to do airs rub our hands together when wind’s like that. I did that big alley-oop on that first wave and I stacked it, but when I was through air I felt the board sticking to my feet. I knew that heat was going to be fun. I wasn’t aware of his (Adam Melling’s) position on the rankings, but I’m thinking about the money. I’m trying not to, but it’s there in the back of my head.”
Melling, current No. 35 on the ASP World Ranking, will not make the mid-year rotation for Trestles, but could possibly appear as an alternate in the remainder of the ASP World Title events.
Mick Fanning (AUS), 30, two-time ASP World Champion, rebounded after a Round 1 loss yesterday, making a change in his equipment to dispatch of dangerous local wildcard Balaram Stack (USA), 20, with a dominant performance.
“It’s always hard when you lose that first round, you’ve got to go back and pick up the pieces and go again,” Fanning said. “Wildcards are difficult because they’re usually locals and they know spot. I tried to get moving early and keep moving. The tide was dropping out and I just tried to get them in early. My board yesterday wasn’t working to well, so I went back to my normal shortboard that I’ve been riding all year.”
Brett Simpson (USA), 26, got the best of a series of exchanges over ASP Dream Tour veteran Taylor Knox (USA), 40, in their Round 2 match-up. Knox, current No. 30 on the ASP World Ranking, will wait on the results of the surfers ranked behind him who are still alive in the Quiksilver Pro New York to see if he maintains his position among the ASP Top 34 entering Trestles.
“We all knew coming into this event that Taylor (Knox) needed to do something and I am coming off momentum from Teahupo’o,” Simpson said. “He’s been a mentor and friend since I started on tour last year. He’s inspired all of us. It’s just the way it goes. I was anxious. I knew there was a lot on the line for him and I want to climb the rankings too.”
Simpson will face off against ASP Dream Tour rookie Julian Wilson (AUS), 22, in Round 3.
Jeremy Flores (FRA), 23, who was a standout at Teahupo’o, maintained his form in the beachbreak conditions on offer at the Quiksilver Pro New York, eliminating fellow European and close friend Tiago Pires (PRT), 31, in a hard-fought Round 3 battle.
“I didn’t like surfing against Tiago, I want him on tour,” Flores said. “He’s my friend, but I want to do well here, I want to make heats, but I wanted to see him do well here because I knew he needed a result. I couldn’t find any really good waves. The guys in the heats before had fun waves with great walls and mine were fat or wide. I guess my wave choice was bad, but I made it.”
Bobby Martinez (USA), 29, was disqualified from the event due to an unprofessional outburst after winning his Round 2 heat. Martinez would have met world No.1 Kelly Slater in Round 3. Slater now advances directly to Round 4. Further details are available at www.aspworldtour.com

Kerr Dominates Long Beach Ramps in Round 1 of the Quiksilver Pro New York
LONG BEACH, Long Island/New York (Tuesday, September 6, 2011) – The opening day of the inaugural Quiksilver Pro New York saw the world’s best surfers dig into building two-to-four foot (1 metre) waves, compliments of Hurricane Katia, today, completing Round 1 at Long Beach on Long Island, New York.
Stop No. 6 of 11 on the ASP World Title Series, the Quiksilver Pro New York is a historic event that not only represents the first ever elite contest on America’s East Coast, but also boasts the richest prize-purse in surfing history of US$1,000,000.
Josh Kerr (AUS), 27, reveled in the New York ramps and garnered both of the round’s highest single-wave scores of 9.50 and 9.07 (both out of 10) for monster no-grab air-reverses, scalping a commanding victory over Adriano de Souza (BRA), 24, and Kai Otton (AUS), 32.
“It was like an expression session out there,” Kerr said. “I started getting scores and was enjoying myself out there with those little rip bowl rights. We all had 15 waves and I think we all had fun out there. I went for a free surf and the wind came up and I knew I was going to hunt the rights. It was perfect and I found a couple of those ramps so I’m stoked.”
Kerr advances directly into Round 3 of competition.
C.J. Hobgood (USA), 32, current No. 36 on the ASP World Rankings, is in need of a result at the Quiksilver Pro New York to keep his ASP Dream Tour campaign alive. The former ASP World Champion (2001) earned a Round 1 victory with amazing last-second heroics over an in-form Bede Durbidge (AUS), 28, when he belted an 8.37 (out of 10) with commanding rail-work in the dying moments of the heat.
“I guess I’ve had one or two dramatic finishes in my career, but there’s a lot on the line for me in this contest and I was feeling pretty frustrated out there for most of the heat,” Hobgood said. “It had been lefts all day, but there were a lot of rights in my heat and Bede (Durbidge) got some big scores off the bat. I needed a big score at the end and when that wave came through, I pretty much threw everything I had at it.”
Hobgood, a veteran campaigner among the world’s best surfers, admitted that the ability to adjust to the ever-changing conditions expected through the event window will be crucial in earning a successful result at Long Beach.
“Local knowledge can be an advantage out here, but everyone on tour can surf in every condition,” Hobgood said. “With the storm moving through this week, the conditions are going to change day-to-day so the surfers who adapt the fastest will be the most successful.”
Alejo Muniz (BRA), 21, capitalized on today’s building swell and displayed a series of powerful rail-gouges on his forehand and critical backhand turns to earn a hard-fought victory over Australian goofy-footer Adrian Buchan (AUS), 28, and Floridian standout Cory Lopez (USA), 34.
“It’s pretty fun,” Muniz said. “It’s not that big, but there are still a couple bigger waves and I have a good board for small waves. I just tried to have fun. I started a little slow and my strategy was to go left, but my best wave was on the right and I improved throughout the heat. I always try to do big turns even though it’s small.”
Muniz was joined by fellow 2011 ASP Top 34 rookie Julian Wilson (AUS), 22, in posting big Round 1 wins today. Wilson surgically dismantled the playful afternoon peaks, posting an impressive 17.00 out of a possible 20, en route to a victory over Taylor Knox (USA), 40, and Kieren Perrow (AUS), 34.
“I tried not to watch Kersey (Josh Kerr) because I knew I’d try to over-surf,” Wilson said. “I started the heat how I wanted to, got a 5 and kind of built house on that. I made some silly mistakes, but I was pretty lucky to get some scores at the end. I knew if I got some sort of finner or reverse I’d get a good score. I was pretty jittery in the beginning of the heat, but as soon as I got the good one I felt confident.”
Kelly Slater (USA), 39, reigning 10-time ASP World Champion, opened his Quiksilver Pro New York campaign in lethal form with a solid Round 1 victory.
“New York has been good,” Slater said. “Everyone is super cool and I’m excited to be here. The waves are a little small, so it’s tough, but it’s the first round and no one loses and the swell should be building. My board felt good, it’s an epoxy, but pretty much same thing I’ve been riding. Hopefully we’ll find some peaky barrels and we’ll see what happens. I know that Hurricane swell is out there, so we’ll just see what happens.”
Slater, who regained the lead for the 2011 ASP World Title with his win at Teahupo’o last week, easily made the adjustment from the massive barrels of last week’s competition to today’s tricky beachbreak waves on offer in New York.
“After last week, it’s a little different in these waves,” Slater said. “You’ve got to find the sweet spot out there. Last week, you’re just trying to stay with it at spots like Teahupo’o, but on days like today there isn’t much energy so you’ve got to find it.”
Tiago Pires (PRT), 31, current No. 33 on the ASP World Ranking, is also in need of a big result at the Quiksilver Pro New York in order to maintain his position among the elite ASP Top 34, and advanced directly through to Round 3 after heat-leader Matt Wilkinson (AUS), 23, suffered an interference on Damien Hobgood (USA), 32.
“I’ve just been feeling good and not thinking too much about points,” Pires said. “I just try to think about waves and just surf. I wasn’t nervous until Wilko (Matt Wilkinson) got the interference and I got the lead. Wilko kind of gave the heat to me, it was unlucky for him.”
Dane Reynolds (USA), 25, who has yet to compete in an ASP World Title event this season, was scheduled to surf in the Quiksilver Pro New York but withdrew today due to an injury sustained last week to his ribs on a free-surf trip in Japan.
“I came to New York with every intention to surf, but I knew it would be a challenge with my rib injury,” Reynolds said. “I tried surfing yesterday and it was painful to even stand up. I’ve never dealt with bruised ribs before so hopefully some more rest will get me ready for the next contest.”
Reynolds has been replaced by Keanu Asing (HAW), 18, in Round 2 of competition. Asing will face Adrian Buchan (AUS), 28, in Round 2 when competition resumes.
When competition recommences, it will be Mick Fanning (AUS), 30, up against Balaram Stack (USA), 20, in the opening heat of Round 2.
Event organizers will convene tomorrow morning at 6:30am to assess conditions for a possible 7am start.
Surfline, official forecasters for the Quiksilver Pro New York, are calling for clean offshore conditions with occasional light rain, and slowly increasing SE swell from Katia mostly in the chest to shoulder high range with a few head high sets. Longer lines sweeping in but still peaky/fun from yesterday’s leftovers.

Aritz Aranburu Claims ASP 5-Star Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro Title
PLAYA DE PANTIN, Galicia – Spain (Sunday, September 18, 2011) – Aritz Aranburu (Zarautz, EUK) 26, today claimed the ASP 5-Star Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro taking down Santiago Muniz (ARG) 18, in a low scoring tactical final where wave selection proved crucial, 13.67 to 8.93, in tough wind affected 5-6ft waves. It turned into a battle of the fittest with the finalist having to surf four times during the day in building swell at the main event site at Pantin.
Both finalists changed peak on various occasions positioning for the best waves during the 40-minute final with Aranburu gaining the advantage halfway through the matchup with a series of critical backhand turns to claim a solid 7.17 out of 10. His backup score on a short right was all that was needed to distance himself from Muniz and claim the victory.
“I am very happy right now. At the end of the final I was dead with no strength left in my arms but it is great right now. Everything went well in the Final for me even though it wasn’t like in the semis or the previous heats. It was a difficult day for waves and you had to paddle back to the peak many times so the last heat was really tough but it was worth it and I am stoked.”
Aranburu, who went ballistic in his semi-final against Glen Hall (IRL) with two savage rights to claim the highest combined heat total of the event, 16.84 out of 20, was able to maintain his rhythm in the final and assert his experience over his younger rival.
“At the beginning I went over to the right again but I saw that it had a lot of current running through it and it looked a bit strange so I went over to the other side and the decision worked out well for sure. In the end I couldn’t do anything more. I was so tired and when I had to paddle back out my arms had no strength at all.”
Muniz, younger brother of elite ASP World Tour member Alejo Muniz and surfing under the Argentinean flag, claimed his best career result with his runner-up finish. Muniz was on fire throughout the morning advancing through Round Five to then comfortably proceed through the man-on-man format to the final where he struggled to find any decent scoring rides.
“I am really pleased with this result. It is really good for me. I would have liked to have won like any other competitor would want but really I am happy right now. I am happy for Aritz, he is a great competitor and I love Pantin and I want to return here always.”
Muniz, one of the best up-and-comers on the junior circuit, made it look easy in the heavy seas with clean flowing turns and variety of innovative manoeuvres to build modest totals however enough to beat his competitors. The explosive natural-footer now moves on the upcoming ASP World Junior event in Bali, Indonesia where he will take added confidence gained in Pantin.
“I’m dead. We had many heats to surf today and at 30-minutes we had lots of time in the water with lots of waves. I am tired but I am still happy. My good boards broke before I came to this contest and they were smaller and for doing aerials. This big board I have now is a lot bigger and for here it was perfect and I am very happy with it. Now I have the World Pro Junior in Bali next week and right now I am going to enjoy this result and then start to focus on the next event which is very important for me.”
Glen Hall (IRL) 27, ran out of time to pull back a steam rolling Aranburu in his semi-final clash to finish equal 3rd in one of the most exciting clashes of the Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro. Trailing Aranburu the entire encounter by combination, Hall answered back with two massive backhand hacks to get back into the game with an 8.27 out of 10. Still requiring another score, a huge set pounded through the line-up of Pantin to deny Hall one last opportunity to close the gap.
“I think I had my chances for sure. I got a couple of big ones and I was going for two turns because I figured two big turns on a set wave would be an 8. I never felt completely out of it but I finally got my 8 a bit late and that set came and I couldn’t get back out. I was knackered and got flogged. It’s good though.”
Earlier in the day, Hall carefully chose his position in the line-up and was one of the few surfers able to master the tricky main peak against the headland at Pantin. The push of the tide helped improve conditions with the growing swell and allowed both surfers the possibility to put on a great show for the huge crowds watching the action.
“I looked at that really closely and I have been surfing down the beach all week. I saw that down the beach was a bit too quick to get two good turns in and I was thinking if Aritz would come out there too. In the end I was glad he did even though I lost. I knew the best waves would be there and it was good to have a heat like that where I had my chances but Aritz went mad so good on him.”
Chris Friend (Sunshine Coast, AUS) 20, finished equal 3rd to claim his career best result on the ASP Star tour. After being one of the form surfers through the morning session with clean powerful turns, Friend was unable to get into his semi-final bout against Muniz, finding only one decent scoring ride due to his decision to select the main peak which failed to deliver him results.
“I got flogged pretty hard in the heat before against Alex (Chacon) where I spent about 5 minutes trying to get back out and I ran out of energy in this heat. I also kind of made a wrong decision to go over to the right and it threw me out right from the start. I had an opportunity at the end and I took off and it just melted underneath me. I basically had a text book ‘Shocker’ so not much more I can say about it. (laughs)”
Friend now moves on to the remainder of the 2011 season with a much higher ranking which he hopes to build on and thus enter the Top 90 to secure a position in the crucial ASP Prime events.
“It is definitely my best result on the Star tour and I hadn’t really had a result on the Europe leg so it is good to go home with a 3rd in the bag. This has given me confidence for the last few events through the back of the year. Hopefully it will give me a bit of a boost into some of the Prime events at the end of this year and the start of next year.”
The ASP 5-Star Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro 2011 is scheduled to run until the 18th of September 2011.

MIA to NYC Detour
With the MIA to NYC tour experiencing some severe weather from Hurricane Irene and their primary concern being the safety of those involved, Tony Hawk and crew have decided to divert their route through Columbia, South Carolina and change up some of the tour stops. The Virginia Beach event scheduled for Sunday has been cancelled and they have moved the Fayetteville, North Carolina (Double Decker Skatepark) event to Sunday, August 28th at 4:00pm.

EVERYTHING GOES WRIGHT AT QUIKSILVER PRO NEW YORK
LONG BEACH, Long Island, NY (Sept. 9, 2011) – After four consecutive days of world class competition that drew 100,000 new fans to the beach, and a day of surfing that will go down in history, it can safely be said that everything went right at the inaugural $1million Quiksilver Pro New York Supported by vitaminwater. Owen Wright, the 21-year-old rookie from DownUnder took out 10-time world surfing champion Kelly Slater (USA) to write the sport’s greatest underdog tale: A kid from the Aussie sticks making it big in New York to take home a record $300,000 and move to No.2 in the world
The Quiksilver Pro New York Final marked a rematch between the pair from the previous stop on the ASP World Title Series in Tahiti. But today belonged to Wright and the monumental nature of the moment was not lost on the New York crowd who passionately rooted on a kid they’d never heard of before this week.
Wright wasted no time in the Final, belting a 7.00, a 9.23, and an 8.00 in the opening minutes of the heat against Slater with a savage forehand attack on the clean left-hand walls. Slater never made it off the ropes, unable to tap back into the brilliance that blinded opponents Josh Kerr (Australia) and Taj Burrow (Australia) in his quarter- and semi-final heats – heats that were worthy of being finals in themselves.
As the clock counted down, Slater made one last push, throwing everything he had into a last ditch effort that ended in a broken board.
“Firstly all my friends and family came to mind,” said Wright. “I’m just as stoked as they are. It just overwhelmed me thinking of them.
“The conditions were perfect for me. I knew I’d do everything I could to get to the final with Kelly and I knew he’d be there anyway. Once I got the final I went, no, this is payback for last week! But I’ve watched Kelly my whole life. He’s been a huge inspiration to me.
“I walked for six hours one day in the city just looking around. I’ve seen nothing like it before. I went to the top of the Empire State building and looked down and I was thinking Central Park was just some small park, but it’s like central forest! It’s the biggest thing I’ve ever seen. But that’s just New York. Everything’s huge. Huge prize money, hell trophy and perfect surf.”
Prior to the final, Slater was in deadly form. His ultimate loss was taken graciously and he seemed to revel in the opportunity to share the moment with Wright. It was 20 years ago that Slater stood in the place that Owen stands today. Wright was 1-year-old that year.
“Owen’s first win – this is going to be a memory for his whole life and I’m stoked to be in that final with him. I’m a hundred per cent confident that he’s going to at least one world title. He’s basically still a rookie and in my opinion he’s probably the most well-rounded guy on tour.
“I felt off from wave one. I took off on the first wave and just misread it.”
On his heat with Taj: “It’s funny, because I get nervous until somebody gets a good ride and then I know what I need to do. I almost enjoy it more when somebody gets a big score because it brings you to a level. It opens the flood-gates for you.”
In his semi-final heat against Burrow, Slater was in need of a near-perfect ride in the dying minutes. Of course, he rose to the occasion like no-one else could, launching the event’s only perfect 10-point ride with a gigantic frontside full-rotation slob grab on a closeout section. It was a hard defeat for Burrow, who had the crowd in his corner with a ballistic display of both tail-busting power turns and sky-scraper aerials.
“Even with my 9 and a 7.8, I still didn’t feel safe because Kelly’s capable of (a perfect 10) and he did it,” said Burrow. “He tried lots of wild airs and the wind wasn’t cooperating with him… and I was like, I hope he doesn’t stick one of these things. But sure enough, he gets a big wedge and I let him have it. It looked too big and dumpy. But he did the best air of his life! I don’t know how he does it. It won’t even do it justice explaining how freakish that actually is, what he just did. That’s the best air he’s ever done in his life and he did it when he needed, with a minute to go, and it had to be against me. It hurts. It’s awful.”
Josh Kerr leaves New York as another sentimental favorite. He came here with no expectations, hot off a performance in Tahiti that marked his true arrival to the top ranks. Third place today solidifies him in the top 10 – now 6th in the world.
“It’s a little frustrating…but maybe it was fate, because what happened with him and Taj was meant to be,” said Kerr. “That’s good for our sport what just went down. I was stoked to see it. Still bummed on losing, but bitter sweet.
“Being in the big city and getting a big result, and getting good waves… there’s a lot of people watching this. Having heats verse Kelly is obviously a good thing because people will wake up in the middle of the night to watch those.”
Alejo Muniz (BRA), 22, currently competing in his rookie year on the ASP World Title Series, was in impressive form throughout the entirety of Quiksilver Pro New York competition, but was unable to trump Wright in their Semifinals heat. Muniz’s equal 3rd place finish marks his career-best result.

The Quiksilver Newport Beach Surf Championships, September 24-25
San Clemente, Calif. (September 13,2011) – The Quiksilver Newport Beach Surf Championships, presented by Jack’s Surfboards, is pleased to announce the details for the 23rd annual contest at 54th Street on September 24-25. Rich with a colorful history, this contest embodies the Orange County surfing lifestyle and celebrates the industry’s humble beginnings.
Dedicated to acknowledging the local surfers that have defined “the hottest 100 yards” of Newport Beach for decades—they’ve also influenced much of the surf style we still see today—this year’s amateur competition will consist of 138 surfers in seven age divisions, ranging from Elementary School to Masters to Legends.
“We are proud to host the Quiksilver Newport Beach Surf Championships once again this year,” said Vice President of Marketing, Mike Matey. “54th street is such a historic spot for surfing and Quiksilver, and to bring this back to today’s youth is great – we look forward to a fun weekend.”
Embracing its history, sponsor Zinka will be out in full force again this year with a “best neon face painting”
competition. The individuals to best embrace their inner-’80s self will win $500 worth of prizes. In addition to Quiksilver and Jack’s Surfboards, other participating sponsors will offer up $5,000 worth of cash and prizes during what is sure to be another memorable weekend under the sun.

“The Art of FLIGHT” Premieres To Star-Studded Crowd In New York City
New York, NY (September 8, 2011) – Starting today, snowboarding and cinema fans worldwide will have the opportunity to share in the cinematic experience that nearly 3,000 fans enjoyed last night at the New York City world premiere of “The Art of FLIGHT,” a film produced by Red Bull Media House in association with Brain Farm Digital Cinema. The premiere, held at the iconic Beacon Theatre, welcomed the film’s entire cast and crew including pro snowboarder Travis Rice, celebrities such as Justin Timberlake, Mike Diamond from the Beastie Boys and Owen Wilson, the top surfers in the world, plus thousands of enthusiastic fans to fill every seat in the house.
“The Art of FLIGHT” mixes equal parts stunning action footage and harrowing adventure with the inevitable drama encountered along the way, presenting viewers with an exclusive opportunity to experience these endeavors virtually firsthand. Day two kicked off with the National Anthem followed by the final heats of each division. With tropical storm ‘Greg’ filling in the best contenders were psyched to surf their heats. There was everything from amazing barrels, critical turns, and mind blowing airs. NFL Quarterback Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints was on hand to check out the morning heats and tweeted about the surf action to his 600,000+ followers…thanks Drew! To top it off Quiksilver had an amazing one hour Expression Session allowing an all-star crew the ability to shred Point Magu and put on a show for all who came out to witness the off limits surf break. The line up was absolutely destroyed by the likes of Craig Anderson, Tyler Newton, 4 time world champion Steph Gilmore, Pete Mel, John Mel, Kanoa Igarashi, Strider Wasilewski, Adam Virs, Benji Weatherly, Pascal Stansfield, and some much appreciated local Quiksilver retailers.
Congratulations to Quiksilver team rider’s Tyler Newton who won the Open Mens Division and Kanoa Igarashi for taking second in the Young Guns Division.
